This is the formula we use to calculate the picture of the day, picture of the week and picture of the month charts.

The formula gives a true Bayesian estimate:

weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

where:

R = average for the picture = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the picture = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed (currently 100)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6)

I still see that people are able to accidentally vote more than once?

This is a good place to start but I would like to see a slight change in the way we vote. I would like it broken down into 1. Technical Abilities 2. Photo composition 3. Originality of content.
What I’m seeing is far to much focus on #1 with a cool feature such as a cloud etc. We need to take this technology and make it an art not just about the technology.

I agree with duddy: the emphasis seems to be on the technique, rather than its use to produce a meaningful photograph. Personally, I am getting tired of the overemphasis of the cloudy skies and excessive halos. But I respect the judgement of the online community! This is a fine site and I thank the organisers for making it available to HDRI enthusiasts the world over.

A physicist friend of mine help me out with the top rated formula. He simplify the original formula and he added, as I asked, a new time variable.

In complex words this is the new formula:

(v × R + m × C) / ((v + m) * log(days))

where:

R = average for the picture = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the picture = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed (currently 100)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6)
days = days since the photo was uploaded

in other words:

Fresh new high rated pictures come before old hight rated pictures and the chart may change every day.

I’m leaving these formula for few days, I may adjust it a little bit but I think it’s pretty much what I was looking for.

Have a look and let me know your feelings.

@hdrstation: Everyone can vote every photos. But just one vote per photo and you can’t rate your own photos.

Noted that. I will update my HDR photos here from day and hope will get good feedback. Thanks for the info Carlo.

@pandarino: m è una costante che vale 100.
