This is a cotton gin, considered a revolutionary piece of machinery that did the work of hundreds of slaves in one day that would take weeks to be worked by manual labor. The gin removed the cotton seeds from the fibers and left a clean, workable material that was easily woven into fabric. This machine almost single-handedly ushered in the textile industry in the United States. This unit is located in a remote area in the state of Georgia and is on private property. I was honored to be allowed into this ancient building to see this incredible piece of history, left the same as it was on it's last day of labor, almost 75 years ago on the banks of the Big Cotton Indian river.
