The town has ancient origins ( it is believed that Viterbo derives from the Latin Urbs Vetus , that is, the Old Town [3] ) and has a vast medieval town center - with several well-preserved neighborhoods - walled and surrounded by modern districts , except to the west , where lie the archaeological areas and spas ( necropolis of Castel d'Asso , the source of Bullicame , Roman theater Ferento ) . Viterbo is historically known as the City of the Popes : in the thirteenth century was in fact the papacy and for about 24 years, the Papal Palace hosted or there were various elected Popes. Pope Alexander IV in 1257 decided the transfer of the Papal Curia in the city because of the hostile climate present in Rome , the papal residence lasted until Pope Martin IV , newly elected ( 22 February 1281 ) , the papal court definitively away from Viterbo.
The city is famous for the transportation charges of Santa Rosa , traditional and spectacular event that takes place every year on September 3 , in honor of the patron saint : an illuminated structure , 30 meters high and weighing 52 tons , is carried on shoulders hundred men, porters Santa Rosa, abbuiate through the streets of the city.
