Plotted on an old Roman path, structured with watchtowers, some dating to the Byzantine period, has been used for centuries by merchants and travelers coming to the area of Belluno, from shepherds to transhumance, from religious votive pilgrimage, to Spain and Portugal and as a return path of the "rafters" running down the Piave. During the ninth century., the new requirements justify the need for a paved path and easier. The work began in 1914, however, thanks to a large labor supply. The design and construction management was entrusted to engineer Carpenè Joseph (1839-1929), by the use of 500 migrants repatriated from 1914 to 1916 will make a first section of the route. During the First World War, for strategic reasons, the Austrian genius completed the work very quickly, and the Fourth Army ordered the construction of the road in January of 1918, creating the six galleries that characterize it today. The realization was linked to plans tactically offensive planned for mid-June '18 (Albrecht operation on the Piave front and Operation Radetzky for Grappa and plateaus). The use of about 7,000 workers, will allow the Austro-Hungarian the indicated deadlines. In June of 1918 was inaugurated as "the road of 100 days".
