The Maroon Bells are probably one of the most photographed spots in Colorado. These majestic peaks catch the early morning light while the valley and Maroon Lake are in full shade. It's very challenging to shoot here with traditional filters, because of the extreme contrast and shape of the valley walls.
I made this shot with my Nikon D700 and 17-35mm f/2.8 Nikkor zoom lens. It's a 5-shot HDR merge using Nik Software's HDR Efex Pro software. I started with a custom "Natural Landscape" HDR preset for HDR Efex Pro, that was developed by Tony Sweet and myself. I was able to make numerous local adjustments to the HDR image with Control Points in HDR Efex Pro, and I completed processing (sharpening) in Nikon's Capture NX2.
