A Lockheed F-104G "Starfighter" of the German Navy Museum in Wilhelmshaven. Here with the emblem of the MFG 1 (Navy Air Squadron 1) for the Baltic Sea area. From 1960 until 1991 there were 916 Starfighters in service in the German Armed Forces . 292 F-104's got lost in crashes and accidents, that's why the Starfighter also was nicknamed as "Flying Coffin", "Widowmaker" or "Earth Pin" Besides that, for a 1958-design she's a real beauty!

I seem to recall the reason they fell out of the sky at an alarming rate was because of weight as more things were packet in then allowed for by the original design specifications. It only had a 7ft wingspan. I think the Americans had the same problem.
