http://leadinlines.com/?p=717 On my recent trip to Italy I decided that whilst in Venice, I was going to capture a quiet shot of Venetian life from a local perspective, to show that people actually live in this crazy busy place too. How about an shot of a small canal with some washing lines hanging out over the windows, I thought? How very original, ahem…. Yes, we all get to experience the many lovely buidings and sights Venice has to offer but what about the local people who live in the city whilst we’re all running around sight seeing and generally being tourists? I always think about things like this when I visit a foreign country. It really fascinates me, how other people live. I got a small taste of what it must be like for them when I saw an 80 odd year old woman shout and scream at the tourists who were getting in her way while she was carrying some shopping! She was walking faster than they were down the narrow alleys and she just wanted to go about her daily business without having to navigate through large swathes of people. How hard must it be for them to suffer mass tourism and do the locals who have no economic gain from tourism ‘appreciate’ visitors to their unique city? I wonder. Anyone who has ever visited Venice can easily see that the ratio of visitors against the local Venetian people weighs heavily in the favour of the tourists or so it seems to me anyway. I once read that in the height of summer Venice can get over 50,00 unique visitors a day, many of those are from the huge cruise ships that dock in the harbour.
