800 year old Church on moat, ... - HDR Photo

During the middle of the 13th century the abbot of Schwanden at the time had a castle tower built as a means of protection against enemy attacks and in order to safeguard the monastery\'s estates.

In 1299, the grounds were substantially fortified with walls, ramparts and water trenches. After being ravaged by Napoleon, the castle church, tower and water trench were restored bit by bit.
