The Romanesque castle was probably from the 9th Century, built to control a section of the Werra Valley. First, there was a wait, which consisted of the still existing round tower and a surrounding wall. Around 1200 the castle was then the noble family of knights Treffurt transformed into a castle. It led to the two square towers, gatehouse and Knappenbau. That later came another bailey, which was in turn protected by a wall. All buildings are made of limestone bricks. North of the castle was excavated a deep moat to prevent attacks.
