Located at the foot of Capitol Hill, the Arch of Septimius Se-
True was built in 203 A.D. to celebrate the victories ot-
held by the emperor against the Parthians.
The arch, completely covered in marble, is a three-arched
framed by Corinthian columns set on podiums and is surmounted
mented with a high attic where you can still read the inscription
dedication (in the fourth line the name and title of Geta, if-
second son of Septimius Severus, were deleted and replaced
lished by the formula "optimisé fortissimisque Principibus" - to
good and strong principles - after his assassination, ordered
by his brother Caracalla).
The decoration of the main faces of the arc (the one facing
to the Forum and that faces the Capitol) is very
rich and elaborate. The podium of each column was adorned with fi-
gures of the Roman soldiers escorting prisoners shares, while
Central to the sides of the archivolt are located two winged Victories
leading trophies and headed to the key central
tral of which depicts Mars.
On either side of the lower arches, which could take only
feet, are carved two statues that represent expected
river gods, while above them ran a frieze, or-
almost never disappeared, and in depicting the triumphal procession
Septimius Severus had accompanied him on the Capitol.
The space between the tubes and the side frame supported
includes columns from large-relief panels that
polishing the most important facts of companies with military-
Piute in the Parthian campaign.
