The original name was Santa Maria in the Capitol and the church was part of the complex of buildings of the monastery that had settled on the Capitoline Hill and the rest of the ancient Roman buildings was in ruins.
The current name, as evidenced by the 1323 (had to be in popular use for some time), there are several options. That goes back to the currently prevailing legend, reported in the Mirabilia Urbis Romae, for which the church was built in the place where Augustus, having had the vision of a beautiful woman with a baby, he also heard a voice saying, "This the altar is the son of God. "It was Mary, mother of Jesus is in fact Mirabilia says:
"This vision occurred in the chamber of the Emperor Octavian, where now stands the church of St. Maria in the Capitol. For this reason the Church of St. Mary was called Altar of Heaven. »
