I took a single RAW of this plant and tonemapped it using the 'enhanced' preset in Photomatix. I tried multiple shots but the colours and tones just didn't look right for this subject.

I don't want to go into dispute with you Karl, but this is our thistle [Illyrian (Albanian)] Onopordum illyricum. ;-)

That is interesting. I shot the same last week ( OK, only german thistle ) but i came to the same conclusion.

I think it's Scottbanian thistle. Great shot either way. Or maybe it's Alscottian thistle.

@Vendenis. I'm a cell biologist, so no expert in thistles! The Scottish Thistle (our national emblem) is Onopordum acanthium, which is what I thought I was photographing. Onopordum illyrium does not look like this.
