These are the Lechones (piglets) is a typical carnival costume characteristic of the Santiago de los caballeros city (the first Santiago of America), lechones because their mask resemble a pig with a rather stylized duckbill, the costume is made of brightly colored overalls of one color, sometimes two, three or even four colors, adorned with bells, ribbons, pennants and circular mirrors, attached to the dress is a cap that covers the back of the head.
There are 2 types of Lechones which costumes and masks are identical except for the horns, a group called pepineros (left on picture) have two big smooth horns and the other group called joyeros (right on picture) have 2 big horns that have small horns growing out from the main one.
The Santiago carnival es considered one of the most important of the Dominican Republic, the celebration is held every Sunday in February.
In previous years they carried whips (left lechon) they used to face each other; today they use cow bladders lined with a cloth bag (right lechon).
The right lechon is a joyero with an allegorical costume to the Dominican Republic flag.
