This is an allegorical figure of a popular character in the Dominican folklore called "la marchanta", is usually an old women, than at early hours of the morning went out to sell her products on the streets, among which are vegetables, groceries, fruits, flowers, spices among other things.
Usually these women came from rural areas to sell their products in the city carrying them in a basket on her head, other accompanied by a donkey carrying heavier products. The voices of these women announced their goods were in a way a type of human alarm that woke people of the city very early in the mornings.
Today is a character who almost disappeared and is a part of our popular folklore.
