Series 2 came as a response to U.S. safety standards that affected the appearance and performance of the car. The biggest change was the newly uncovered headlights, replacing organic glass lamps covered in the first series. Furthermore, the buffers were lifted there was a greater group of lights below their levels. Interior has also undergone changes, with a slight revision of the instrument panel and the aluminum center console was replaced with a black vinyl. In 1969, the signs were changed and added the head restraints on the front seats. Were also improved brakes, power steering and air conditioning as well as offered. Some of these changes came in 1967, such as adjustable headrest seats, new safety belts or exposed headlights.
