Notes This photo is going to be used in an upcoming book: "The Emerald Mile" by Kevin Fedarko- it's about rafting the Grand Canyon during high-water flood conditions in the 1980's. If you like rafting, you should read Kevin's book when it comes out.

I wanted to photograph an iconic place like the Grand Canyon in an a-typical way- so last August I waited on the South Rim while updrafts from the Canyon bottom created giant cumulus (and eventually storm) clouds. I wanted to make the Grand Canyon a backdrop for something equally spectacular.

A wonderful shot but I think the cloud bottoms and sky are way too dark.
