I took this shot whilst standing on the bridge over the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. Looking down you are able to see the old canal locks which take boats and barges down to the Ottawa River in the distance. These locks are still in operation, but purely for visitors today. Also in the distance can be seen one of the many bridges which span the Ottawa River in this city to the Quebec side, known as Gatineau. The Fairmont Château Laurier Hotel can be seen on the right and is a grand hotel with 429 guest rooms, located near the intersection of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive and designed in the French Gothic Châteauesque style to complement the adjacent Parliament buildings which can been seen on your left. I have spent a few nights in this grand old place and I can speak from experience...it is grand and the service is exceptional.
The Château Laurier was commissioned by Grand Trunk Railway president Charles Melville Hays, and was constructed between 1909 and 1912 in tandem with Ottawa's downtown Union Station (now the Government Conference Centre) across the street. The hotel features original Tiffany stained glass windows and hand-moulded plaster decorations dating back to 1912.
PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL BE AWAY THIS WEEKEND AS OF NOW..BACK ON MONDAY. I APOLOGISE FOR NOT VOTING FOR ANYONE, BUT I NEED TO GET AWAY FOR A BREAK. TAKE CARE ALL.
