The brass eagle lectern, supported on a moulded stem with three lions decorating the base, was presented to the church in 1524 by Matilda, the daughter of John ap Gruffydd of Plas-y-Stiwart, in accordance with her father's will. It was probably made in East Anglia and cost E6. The law requiring every parish church to provide a Bible was only passed in 1538, and this lectern is one of only about forty surviving from the pre-Reformation period. A study of the lectern's three feet will clearly show that the man who made it had never actually seen a lion. Hanging from the north wall is the flag of the United States of America which was presented to the Parish Church by the 129th General Hospital, U.S. Army, in July 1945, a military unit based in Penley during the Second World War. Opposite this on the south wall hang the colours of the United States Marine Corps which were laid up in the church in 1946. The USMC and the Royal Welch Fusiliers have been closely linked since they served together in Peking (Beijing) in 1900.
