This is one end of the 4-gang stamping battery at the Victoria Hill historic gold-mining site in the city of Bendigo. These batteries crushed the quartz ore, which was then sent to the various installations that recovered the microscopic gold particles. Mining went on for nearly 100 years at Victoria Hill, with at least 1.2 million ounces of gold taken out. The last mine to operate in the city was Central Deborah, which shut down in 1954, and now operates as a tourist attraction. When I write 'in the city' I mean that some of these mines were almost in the central business district. It was a mining town, built around the diggings!
