In 1859, gold was discovered in this area known as Gregory Gulch. Many mines were dug as more veins of gold were discovered. In 1975 I was up in the town as filming of a bar scene for "The Duchess and The Dirt Water Fox" was being filmed at The Teller House. This is the view taken from the 22nd floor of a hotel in Blackhawk, Colorado. The tailings from many mines are visible. This area was also known as the richest square mile on earth at one time. Had a chance to go down into a mine in 1975 about 300 feet deep I think. Name of mine in upper left is visible on red building "Cour D' Alene" and on the purple building I think it is "Prize".
