This is the typical dry bush landscape that dominates much of Mapungubwe National Park along the Limpopo River. It was at sundown on Heritage Day a couple of years ago, when there was a special gathering to celebrate the late 11th to early 13th century kingdom that was centred here, on the border between modern Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe. There are no historical records, but the archaeology suggests considerable wealth and trade routes that brought goods from as far away as China.
